What SS unit are you portraying , and which period ?

Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
As Halle says it will depend on unit portrayed and period of the war. Some styles are only good for late war and others run all the way through from the start to the finish.
There are numerous books about that would help.
I'm no expert but I know a little (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!)
The first pattern smock had no pockets and had two slits on the upper body so that the tunic pockets could be accessed.
The later pattern smock had pockets on the front and had loops sewn around the shoulders for camouflage to be attached.
The earlier patterns were Plane tree - of which there was several different colour variations, followed by, and in no particular order, oakleaf, ringed oakleaf, palm, burred or smoked edge.
I believe Zelts were made in Plane tree, burred edge and Oakleaf.
Don't, what ever you do, get a Zelt or smock in Pea dot!!! They did not exist.
While there is a huge selection of styles and patterns if you are part of a group then the best thing is to contact your group and ask what the preferred style is. Most groups will have a uniform or authenticity officer than can advise you.
Remember buy right. Buy once!
Good luck

Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
Plane tree was by far the predominant pattern used throughout the war. If you can find either a current or old SMW smock, you'll be set. The Chinese stuff is close, but it's still not great yet.
Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
I have always used original pictures as a reference for my impressions , for example , the Handschar impression I'm putting together includes a blurred edge smock , as they can be seen being worn by members of the Division ( as well as Oakleaf and pea dot uniform items ) . I'm sure plenty of pictures exist of the LAH from 1940 onward , you could take your reference from those .

I have been on the SMW site there smocks and helmet covers are expensive are they worth the extra money compaired to say a Richard Underwood smock I am asking for as much advice as possible because i want to buy once and buy right
Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
SMW camo is some of the best (if not the best) available. I'm sure RAU has stocked their stuff in the past but not sure if he still does. Soldier of Fortune is a SMW stockist though so you would save on postage and tax from US

Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
Would somebody be able to explain the different planetree terms? For example, what does 5/6 mean? Where they issues at different times? things like that. Please and thank you

Have a read in this PDF; explaining a lot of the camouflage patterns and usage. It's not 'complete', but gives a lot of information.redsun wrote:Would somebody be able to explain the different planetree terms? For example, what does 5/6 mean? ATF has the best breakdown of the Plane Tree manufacturing process.

Also thanks for the links guys, helped a lot.
Re: SS and which camo and Zelt
If you want to go for 1940 on you can't really wear the later type often called the M42. They were not around in 1940.
Plane tree is plane tree is Camo to the QM. You got what was there to be given.
