SS NCO's visor cap

Hi,
I have just "inherited" a nice repro EREL SS NCO's white piped visor cap from a friend that didn't want it any more   ......

Question: As I already have an identical one of these I was thinking of things I could do with it, like modify it from an NCO's cap into a "field-upgraded" officers cap (but I've already got a trikot off's cap, so not really needed), or keep it as an NCO's cap, but change the piping colour, possibly to cavalry/Aufklarungs golden yellow...

If I was to have a go at changing the piping colour, the only realistic option would be to colour the piping in with a pen - have any of you done this? - if so, did it work? Any advice?

Cheers,

Ade

I have not attempted this on a cap and I suspect it would not turn out very well.
An order allowing coloured waffenfarbe on ss caps only lasted a short time until the Reichsfuhrer forbade it,stateing that the traditional piping of the ss is white.
So its ok wether you have a panzer, medical, pioneer uniform etc; to wear a white piped cap.

Cheers for that, yes I was aware that it was only briefly "official" to have waffenfarbe, but it seems that waffenfarbe piped caps were used unofficially at least on a limited basis(?) throughout the war..

But my main reason for thinking about colouring the piping in was that I already have an identical white piped NCO's visor, and didn't need another one - if I could change the piping colour it would make it different....!!

Cheers,

Ade

Well the only thing I could recommend is fabric pens, try it on some scrap material to see if you get an even spread of colour and not patchey like I think you would get with felt pens.I have used fabric paint (made by dylon) on shoulder boards.
I hope you have steady hand though and do'nt go over "the lines" onto the field grey  .

Yeah, it was very uncommon for an officer or NCO to have the piping color on his hat changed if he transferred units. White was the most common, even in specialty units it was rare to see colored piping.

You can pretty much guarantee Oberscharfuhrer Fritz wasn't going to the supply sergeant complaining because after his transfer to the Aufklarungs he didn't recieve a new cap with yellow piping.

Thanks all for the replies - good idea re the fabric pens.

Like I said before, I know piped SS caps were not the norm (apart from the short period when the order changed between 10th May-5th November 1940), but they still existed, and - as I am up to my eyeballs  in white piped SS Caps - having been given a 5th one (!!!), I thought I may have an experiment with it to come up with something a bit "different"..!! If I only had one cap, I'd have white piped, but as I've got a few to play with, I thought I might go for a change with this one...

I was thinking of Cav golden yellow, as if I did slip a little bit and got it on the field grey part of the cap, it wouldn't show up as much as if I'd gone for artillery red say   . I'll have a think about it and see.

Cheers all.

I have a feeling that the chap just might, he's asking about colouring in a repro hat though, settle down.

LOL.

Mate, I seem to remember someone trying this with shoulder boards. They used a felt tip and it didn't come out very well at all. :?

Thanks for that John!!!

The subject of piped SS visors is obviously far more emotive than I had expected....

All things considered I will probably put the "Do-It-Yourself piping re-colouring" on the back burner!!!

Cheers all.

Oh and remember as they were only allowed colours for a breif period of time in(1940?) some of the colours changed later war.
