Missing truck

Post by Mike »

Now this is a totally hypothetical question for the Feldgendarmerie to consider, but let’s say a certain unknown to date Luftwaffe Flak unit had misplaced a nice looking truck somewhere in France.
And lets say a Heer unit had found this truck and not told the Reichsluftfahrtministerium of their find and had in fact kept said truck and painted the door markings out possible by mistake.
lets say the Luftwaffe found out of whereabouts of missing truck and had contacted that unit about getting back Luftwaffe Property and received the reply “your not having it back” I’m just wondering what stance the Feldgendarmerie would take on this, and how serious could this be for the Heer unit involved?

On one of my recent jaunts to Munich I heard a rumour that the current German govt. is going to try and invoke some little known property act.

Apparently to offset a number of govt. incurred losses and debts they are going to try and re-claim all their old WW2 vehicles and then sell them for massive profits.

It seems that anyone who owns any old German vehicles might be getting some kind of summons or order in the near future.

Ah... but... all property owned by the Nazis was deemed forfeit at the end of the war - hence the Allies occupying German barracks etc. for years without paying rent (I beleieve the BAOR only started paying to use land etc. in the mid 60s).

I don't think the Fg would be too concerned with who actually has ownership of the vehicle, as long as it is still in the Armed Forces possession somewhere. They would be more concerned with finding the indivdual(s) who misappropriated the property in the first place. If the individual were caught, the Fg would hand them back to their unit for disciplinary action, as this would be deemed to be a 'minor' offence according to their books. Had the vehicle have been disposed of outside the Armed Forces, then the chances are the individual(s) could be looking at 4 years of porridge, or a length spell in a penal battalion.

Don't forget that vehicles changed unit very frequently, and that registration numbers often changed as well - initially thery were allocated by unit, division etc. but latterly they tended to be by sector - the idea being that it was harder for the natives to spot when units were moving about. Didn't always happen though!!

Anymore word of this potentially nightmare scenario? I know that previous German governments have successfully claimed back the rights to German films - including Military training films etc made during WWII and in doing so they successfully over turned laws which had rendered them copyright free under the 'Captured Enemy Materials Act' (dont think this is the correct term but it is similar). The History Channel and BBC was involved in a few disputes over the use of some German WWII footage.

No summons or requisition request yet.

Good luck to 'em - I foresee some lengthy court cases in Europe, dragging up a lot of 61 year old legislation...

Actually lads, I believe it was all a bit of a tease

Can you imagine some of our more high profile armour owners parting up with £1m pounds worth of renovated treasures?

:D

conjures up all sorts of scary thoughts though ... and made me think of a story I once read - it was on some guys website about the Russian withdrawal from Czechoslovakia, the website owner as far as I can recall runs a BMW garage near Prague and there was an interesting section on his webiste about early VWs. He went on to tell a story that as the Russians were pulling out of the Czech Lands they sent out a call that all owners of German WWII vehicles were to surrender them at a specified location outside of Prague. This guy and his mate visited the area a few times and found several large fields packed with German WWII vehicles - you name it it was there as the people at that time were driving about in kubels to visit the local supermarket etc!

They noticed, however, that the entire area was being policed by a single Russian guard and as teenagers do, one night they stole - I think it was a Kubelwagen - they then went back a second night - I think to acquire a schwimmwagen by similar means only to discover that every thing was gone - shipped back to Russia with the withdrawing army he persumed.

Can you imagine VW Wolfsburg submitting the names and details of all current Kubelwagen owners for collection and relocation to Germany!!! Hasn't a law recently been introduced in France governing the ownership of militray vehicles?

Yeah relax! i know!
