Map case

Post by Krupp »

Would have been common to see anyone under the rank of a Unterfeldwebel as a FG to carry a map case. Being a Obergefreiter I guess I am asking if it would be right seeing me at events with one on?

There is some evidence to support them being issued as I've seen them recorded on page 8 of the Soldbuch. In theory, they were supposedly taken from a central pool, in a similar manner to the gorgets, for those below the rank of unterfeldwebel.

Thanks Dave. I find myself on patrols during events and would like a little bit added to the impression. At an event last year I had a Wehrmacht Soldat ask for directions in German while the crowd was waiting for a street battle to begin. Would of been great to pull out a map and tell him where he was. LOL! Stuff like that is what I am always trying to strive for. A bit a realism for the public, not just for me. Sorry for the novel.

Okay, now is there a rule on what color the case should be? Black or Brown. I see both kinds but why are there two colors?

I'm not sure about rules regarding colouring, I will quote from a book however.

The rural police, distinguished by its orange piping and brown leatherwork, covered landward and mountainous districts of the Reich and also supervised prisoners-of-war engaged in agricultural work.
It was commanded by SS-Gruppenfuhrer August Meyszner.

Just to confuse things, there are colour photos of Ordnungspolizei (black leather) with brown cases, and Gendarmerie (brown leather) with black cases.

The leatherwork referred to, normally, is that of the belt, holster, boots, cross strap and tshacko.

I thought I had responded again but it must not have gone through. Anyway, thanks again Dave. Kevin in the unit has a map-case and we'll be using it as a "pool" situation as you stated. Handy information indeed.

map cases: were at the start of the war issued as black, in nice thick supple leather. Late war map cases are usually brown made of rubbish leather.
