Assignment of new Feldgendarmerie?

Post by Fwbl Eckler »

Hi, new guy here. Been lurking for a week or so and decided to join this fine group. I have a question about civilian police(ordungspolizei say)being conscripted. Prior to the replacement battalions being established in 1940 (and after I suppose) would an active Policeman be assigned to an infantry replacement battalion for training or sent directly to a FG unit? Also I understood that FG kept their civilian police ranks and converted them over to Heer rank, so would a Policeman enter the service as a prvate and then promoted to their regular rank or would they enter at their regular ranks? Sorry if these questions are confusing but I am gathering info to get a soldbuch filled out and i just wanted to do it right the first time.

Depends on the area he is being recruited from - in the case of the unit I represent (Feld. Gend. Trupp 82), it was entirely formed from Viennese policemen. I have seen soldbuchs for regular soldiers who were recruited from the ranks of the police. From having spoken to FG veterans, it would appear that senior NCOs were usually transferred to the FG (provides a good skills base) and then for the lower ranks it seemed to be a case of pot luck.
Paragraph 8a of HDv275 (my copy is dated 29.07.40 with a lot of amendments written and pasted in) states that Feld. Gend officer and NCO positions will be filled with those of officer and NCO grade from the OrPo.
It would appear that those on a direct transfer were posted straight to the unit and the unit trained as a whole, rather than being assinged to replacement batallions and hence to the units. Infantry training was undertaken initially for about 8-10 weeks and then a further 12 months followed at the FG training school in Potsdam. Obviously for soldiers transferring from, say, the infantry, they went straight to Potsdam.
Also I understood that FG kept their civilian police ranks and converted them over to Heer rank, so would a Policeman enter the service as a prvate and then promoted to their regular rank or would they enter at their regular ranks? Ranks were directly transferred. Annex 4 of HDv275:
Wachtmeister = Unteroffizier
Oberwachtmeister = Feldwebel
Revieroberwachtmeister = Oberfeldwebel
Hauptwachmeister >12 yrs service = Oberfeldwebel
Hauptwachmeister <12 yrs service = Stabsfeldwebel
Meister = Leutnant
Obermeister = Leutnant
Inspektor = Oberleutnant

Hope this helps a little!

FG assignments

Thanks for the info. That was kind of what I was thinking, any standing pre-war unit or really early war unit would use the OrPo almost as cadre to form their FG Trupps.

Thanks,

Only a small percentage of thr OrPo were transferred over though (maybe less than 20%) - the OrPo remained as a police organisation, and they were also used extensivley for the Polizei combat units.
