FG rank

Post by Salerno43 »

Did all FG get sergeant rank or would they be jagers/privates etc?

Thanks

No, it's not quite that simple....

Basically your rank should reflect the role you have within the FG. A type 'b' trupp would have 3 officers, 3 NCOS from the 'O' stellengruppe, 50 NCOs from the G stellengruppe and 3 from the 'M' stellengruppe.

The O group NCOs were assigned as Zugführers, the G group as Feldgendarmen and the 3 M group were 2 drivers and an ordanance artificer/armourer.

O group is Feldwebel to Stabsfelswebel inclusive; G group is obergefreiter to unterfeldwebel; and M group is Feldgendarm to gefreiter. The bulk of the police dities were carried out by the G group.

The Herman Goering Division (which, from memory, I think your impression is from) had Feld. Gend. Trupp b (mot) 1000 Herman Goering assigned to it from 03.08.43 so the example cited above would be correct.

Let me know if you need any more info.

It will be a HG FG, basically the impression will be rear echelon, POW, crossroads, checking orders and kit - that kind of deal for the Ost front gig at Mereworth.

I was just wondering what rank I would need to put on the tunic, to be correct.

Thanks Dave

Any rank from Obergefreiter to Unterfeldwebel would be your best bet.

Don't forget if you are doing an impression after April 44, you shouldn't technically wear the arm eagle, though this order was extensively ignored! You can also use either the Heer or Luftwaffe pattern of gorget as both were used by the Luftwaffe FG troops.

Hi Dave, the arm eagle removal was this done to help FG blend if they were captured - I take it Ruskies would cap off FG, rather than take them prisoner?

Unteroffizier seems a good average for LW-FG.

Cheers mate.

It seems that was one of the theories surrounding it. HM.44, Nr.158 of the 13th of March 44 gave this order. At the same time there were laods of strange decisions being taken over the uniforms of the Polizei and the various branches of it. I think it was a reveiw conducted from the Polizei persepective, and the Feldgendarmerie got caught up in the wake of it all.

One other order which may be of relevance to yourselves is LV43, Nr.1115 of the 3rd of June 43 which decreed that the Luftwaffe FG was a seperate branch in its own right and was assigned the orange waffenfarbe.

I took the Obergefreiter. Well, I was given it. From the book I have, it was the lowest rank they had if you were a FG. Hi Dave!

There were Feldgendarm (Soldat equivalent), but their main roles were as drivers, cooks and admin wallahs.

I would assume so, yes. This rule was relaxed in areas where it was unlikely that contact with the Russians or Partisans (such as the Balkans) was going to occur. The Western allies treated the FG the same as any other PoW.
