I would ask you to excuse me if this is posted in the wrong section , but I reckon you are the gents to ask.

I am new to re enacting , totally so - recently recruited into the NI based kampfgruppe Knittel.

Trying to put together a feldgendarmerie uniform for an SS private.
Can you give any advice , I am of the opinion that its best done well or not at all.

Through my own collecting in recent years I have a good gorget which I would use - on dry days at least , other than this a reproduction one will have to be bought.

Something which is unique to the Feldgendarmerie - "the traffic wand" , any potential sources for a perios item or a good reproduction ?
The "kragmantel" all weather overcoat ? ( hope this is spelt correctly ).

Thanks in advance to any one who might be able to help out.

Welcome to the right side of the law.

First off, I would strongly suggest you don't use an original gorget. I've had 3 repro ones over the years, and it's amazing how easy it is to bend, dent and knock them. I used to use an original, but after nearly damaging it, it's back in my collection and remains there!!

The traffic wands come up on eBay from time to time, and some dealers occasionally carry them. The only type used was the red/white circle type - avoid anything with the police eagle in the centre, wording on it or anything which lights up. They are either fake or post war. The wands were issued to every vehicle so orders could be passed along from vehicle to vehicle in convoys so there are plenty of them about.

The coats you mention were issued to those who used motorcycles. They were not issued to every feldgendarme. As the war progressed, the became a unit issued item (same as the gorgets) and were drawn from a pool as and when they were needed. This is evidenced is the later war soldbuchs.

If you need any more help with your Fg impression, drop me a line and I'll try and help out. Have a look at http://www.feldgendarmerie.com for some info about the Fg and their duties (albeit from a Heer perspective).

Best,

Dave
