oh thats a good one, Cant say I have ever seen images of them, Mechanized yes, but Mounted no, as they were mainly a rear echelon force, I would suspect no, the horses would have been needed for artillery use on the eastern front etc..., TBH i also cant think of any reason why they would be using mounted police.

I could however be wrong, I am sure our resident Guru will be along soon with an answer.

is true...I need all the help I can get...lol

I know a lot of Rural Gendarmes became Feldgendarms and in there Police job they would have used horses a lot so its a possibility I suppose though as stated before I have never seen a photo of one on horseback but Feldjager may prove me wrong

Men at Arms " German Military Police Units 1939-45 " has a photograph of Unteroffizier Herbert Keil ( Hermann Göring Div ) on Horseback , E. Prussia 1944 . The caption states " ..The use of horses was because of the congested state of the roads , making the use of Kubelwagen transport rather difficult .."

He appears to be wearing normal Feldgendarme uniform .

So , time to buy a horse ?..

The FG were some of the earliest motorised troops after the 1933 army reorganisations (I think the KStN for about 1935 has them fully motorised). I have a few photos of mounted FG, however based on the available information, it would be fair to say that this was a local arrangement where additional transport was needed. Most of the photos I have seen are Ostfront in the winter, so an inference could be drawn that it was due to the lousy roads that horses were more commonly used.

I also have a couple of photos somewhere of DAK FG on camels... anyone?

I suppose it would depends on where they were located and the local suply of horses, and the access to alternate meens of transport, I can see horses being usefull in places liek greece and italy, where transport routes probably were not the best, however in france and the low countries it my well have been more dificult to obtain them, russia is the odd duck as horses are in common use there however the cold will probably be an issue still.
