Traffic wand use

Post by Krupp »

I was wondering if there was a manual given out to the Feldgendarmerie that detailed the use of the traffic wand? I have a reprinted manual that was given out for the regular soldier during his training so I thought maybe the FG may have had manuals given out as well during his training period. Bottom line is that I would like to direct traffic in a proper and historical fashion.

They used the Ordnungspolizei vorschriften fur strassenvekehr. I have a copy which I'll pull out tomorrow and give you the traffic directing motions. There are only about 7 motions from memory, and they haven't changed much from when I was taught in the RMP!

There was also a few Merkblatten for the Vekehrspolizei and Motorisierte Verkehrsbereitschaft which detailed point duty ar complex junctions and where trams are involved.

Scanner is on the fritz, so here are the descriptions:

"Stopping traffic: Stand with feet togather, left hand by the side and right hand raised straight up holding the wand. This will stop traffic approaching from the front and rear of you.

To turn traffic left or right: Stand with feet together and extend the arm with the wand parallel to the ground in the direction that you wish traffic to turn. The other arm should remain at youre side. This will only apply to oncoming traffic.

To advance traffic: Stand with the feet together and face the traffic you wish to move off. Hold the wand in the right hand, straight out in front and parallel to the ground, then make an up and down motion with the elbow so the wand moves from parallel with the ground, to perpendicular and back again. This should be continued until you either change the command or all the traffic has passed.

In all cases, a whistle blast should be used when issuing a new command to ensure the driver is aware of your commands. Beware of tracked vehicles who may have restricted visibility and also of rear projections/gun barrels as these can swing out when making sharp turns. It is an offence to strike/hit someone on point duty, but only if done negligently or deliberately."

There are also directions for when there are left and right filter lanes at junbctions, but these are too complex to explain in words!

I've measured my original one, it is 40cm overall length, the disc is 14.5cm in diameter and the white border is 2cm wide.

Traffic wand, Kelly. Traffic wand.

Looks like the bromide block in the tea urn needs replacing again.

The folding bit is correct - these were either the normal 2 red/white circles or the top half of the circle is black and the lower half white.

The stick on police eagle however...
