Feldgendarme, Feldpolizei, Feldjäger

Post by gebirgs soldat »

Hello All, Ich habe eine frage (I have a question)

I am considering an alternate impression when my kameraden aren't attending events as an FG or Feldpolizei, or Feldjäger.

My question is re: Gebirgsjäger F.G. for 1st Gebirgs Division.
What unit would that be?

Also, what was the difference b/t Feldpolizei and Feldjäger?
The reason I am asking is I wanted to maintain my Infantry GJ impression (green waffenfarbe) while performing FG duties at an event.
Would Feldpolizei be best? Did they wear the gorget and green armbands? I just don't know that much about the duties of FP and Feldjagers..
Thanks, WALT

Hi Walt,

1. Geb. Div
The Feldgendarmerie trupp assigned to this division from 25OCT1939 was Feldgend. Trupp 54. This was a type C trupp which means the manpower and resources allocated were:
- 1 officer
- 25 NCOs
- 7 EM
- 19 rifles, 10 pistols, 5 MPs, 3MGs
- 1 medium truck (3t), 4 light field cars and 18 bicycles.

The feldpost number was 07978.

The 7 EM were deployed as drivers (5) for each vehicle and 2 for general admin duties. The feldgendarmerie work was undertaken by the NCOs.

Feldjäger etc
The Feldgendarmerie were military police and their functions were quite varied. The served on all fronts and with all levels of command. Their duties were, in a nutshell:
- To ensure firm control of traffic elements, i.e. as 'Route Kommandants' on particular sectors or routes.
- To investigate all traffic accidents relating to armed services personnel and in the case of civilian involvement, to work in conjunction with the responsible local police.
- Surveillance of Wehrmacht personnel conduct with regard to regulations and discipline, especially in places removed from their superiors, usually by street patrols in co-operation with the Army street patrol service (Heeresstreifendienst).
- Prevent robbery and looting.
- Preventing desertion and the arrest of personnel who are absent without leave.
- Establish prisoner assembly points.
- Remove obstacles on supply and troop movement routes, usually in co-operation with the recovery and repair units.
- Search enemy headquarters and installations for intelligence, especially paperwork, maps, radio logs etc. Usually conducted in co-operation with the 'Geheime Feldpolizei' (GFP), the army's security and intelligence police.
- Disarming of civilian populations, especially in new territories.
- Forming local police forces from the civilian population.

For a lot more details on their duties, have a look at the history section of our unit website: http://www.feldgendarmerie.co.uk (link on the right)

The Feldjägerkorps were a different beast with a much more specifically defined remit. I portray a Feldjäger, and you can see some background info on the same website here

The term 'Feldpolizei' is a modern term applied erroneously. I've only ever seen it referred to in period documents very infrequently.

insignia

Green armband - worn by Feldgendarmerie auxiliaries. These were soldiers from any branch who were temporarily seconded for a specific purpose. The most common use was for traffic control during advances, and most of the photos of them being used tend to be during the earlier period of the war. They did not wear the gorget.

Gorget - worn by all Feldgendarmen when on duty (except officers). These were not a personal issue item, they were collected along with a copy of the Feldgendarmerievorschriften and Tagebuch at the start of each duty.

If you need a hand with the insignia, as (like everything) it changes during the war and items are removed or introduced, then drop me a line and I'll help you out. If you have a browse through our website, you'll find a lot of info on the Feldgendarmerie and a gallery of original picture to help you.
