FG tunic insignia circa: 1939?

Post by grenmartens »

Dave (or other FG gurus out there)

Poland, September 1939 - what tunic insignia would be worn by FG NCOs? I'm assumimg that the branch specific litzen with orange stripes either side of the dark bluish/green median stripe would still be in use but the generic pattern litzen (all stripes dark green) would also be correct, with dark green shoulder boards, piped in orange. However I'm unsure regarding the FG pattern sleeve eagle and cufftitle. Were both of these items being worn in 1939? I seem to remember reading somewhere, although I can't recall where, that the FG eagle wasn't authorised until 1940 - I'd be grafeful for some clarification. Thanks

Cheers Paul - Just one of those little bits of detail that can be frustrating. So few photographic references of that very early war period.

Litzen -either style is correct, but NCOs tried to get the orange branch specific ones as they were considered more 'veteran' status (same as marchsteifel were late war).

The original style of cuff title (green with black lettering), for the Heer, was introduced for wear on 12th March 1937; it changed to the brown with grey lettering sometime late in 1939 but the exact date isn't known and it certainly didn't happen overnight. It's not uncommon to see polizei uniforms with the 'Deutsche Wehrmacht' cuff title being worn. It is known that the cuff title wasn't worn by Ersatztruppen until 9th July 1942.

The arm eagle was introduced in early 39 from memory, I can't remember the exact date!
