Some questions

Post by sapper44 »

Guys;
I have been reenacting for 21yrs this march and as I get "older" I find that I am less into busting caps and going on death marches around the event. I have been thinking of doing a FG impression for a while, and think it would fit in more with what I have been doing as of late. I have been asked to help do safety and weapons inspections at a couple of events and had a blast. I have been out of the German side of things for a while and now that I am getting back into it I want to do it right. I am looking at portraying post D-day till the end, western front Volksgrenadier division. I am having to make do with a few things until I can afford to get the good stuff. I am thinking of maybe an ex Heer panzer Grenadier transfered to the FG.

What I have;
M44 tunic
M43 pants
Basic inf. leather gear/impression
Jack boots.
K98 rifle
Questions;
1. Would FG even wear an M44 tunic, if so what type of FG insignia would have been worn?
2. What FG specific gear should I be looking to get?
3. What gear should I drop from my infantry impression. Gasmask, e-tool, A-frame?
Thanks;
Christian

1. Yes, they were issued to FG. If you are an alte hase, then it might be more appropriate to retain an 'older' style of feldbluse. Insignia for an M44 style would be generic, FG insignia by that stage of the war was ordered to be removed.
2. There was no specific FG gear - items which were used (but not personal issue) included the ringkragen, feldgendarmerievorschriften and tagebuch. Occasionally handcuffs and baton were used, but not in front line areas as a rule.
3. Drop the A frame. most FG seem to have worn their kit in an early war style - mainly from the belt. A rucksack could also be appropriate.

Look at original photos, you'll find plenty of variations - the above is a common denominator answer.

My 0.02pfg worth.

Thanks Dave, this is all new to me. All the years I have been reenacting and it is mostly ever been infantry or engineer. All this research I have just started doing is kinda bringing the old spark back to the game.
