Combat equipment?

Post by barryG »

Ive been looking through my books and on the net trying to find a definantive answer to what an SS FG would carry in a combat role.

I realise that a lot of FG eqipment would be left on a vehicle during combat, so what would he carry. Some say gas masks, some say no gasmasks!
Id like to get this right as Im hoping to do some battles but want to stay in character, rather than just change roles for the battle.

Obvioulsy its police/FJ Y straps, bayonet, ammo puches (1 or 2)... does he carry bread bag/mess tin or is that usually left behind?

The FG were issued the same combat equipment as any other soldier - save for the A frame, I've not seen one in a photo or a soldbuch yet.

Looking at the photos of soldiers on duty, they are rarely carrying anything other than a sidearm, personal weapon and magazine pouch. It is unusual to see a respirator tin being worn, but they could be placed close to hand (given that it was an offence to be without it on duty, it's likely).

The best thing (and my stock answer...) is to examine original photos and dress for the role you are portraying accordingly.
