I seem to remember reading they were painted in a satin gloss paint from factory. Initially without texturing added, which would give it mild shine. This was later changed where aluminium oxide was added to the paint to add texture.

Either that or the tunic is too short??, i know originals were tailored to suit personal taste and were shortened but not that short.....it looks more like a 44 blouse than a 4 pocket tunic ?? :| Peiper...

Alex would do good to leave the forum in the hands of someone capable of making rational decision until whatever personal issues that are driving his current actions have been resolved.

I hate it too, but mostly because I have destroyed my hands playing videogames (Diablo 2 and early CS Beta being the main culprits, as I would play them for 8+ hour stretches) when I was suffering from depression. Anything finicky now hurts my hands beyond measure, be it cluthing a needle or a small...

The buckle should be more or less over the belly button. Seems a bit high, but trousers were generally worn that high as well back then.

Kind of looks like someone has hacked up a Stahlhelm of some description to make a lookalike. "Epic fail" doesn't even begin to describe this abomination

Looks Dutch to me too. I have one I got from a colleague and it belonged to his father. Can't get to it at the moment to directly compare, but definitely looks like the one I have, straps and all.

I meant any kind of kit that might keep you warm in your Wolfgrabhüle really. Pullover, greatcoat, turtleneck from Mutti, gloves, scarf...The occasional reversible parka as well though right?

Pretty much all of that goes for that timeframe. Y-straps in black, brown or none at all. You'll want to throw in some cold weather clothing though

The vinegar and wire wool / metal shavings method of producing a dye has actually been around for hundreds of years and it was used on wood as well as leather.
